Are files from microsoft office for mac really compatible with office for windows?

I'm thinking about switching to mac, and I want to know if transferring files to my friend's computers from office for mac to windows will actually work or give me grief. Also, is the suite of stuff apple makes for word processing, etc. compatible? Will the mac pick up wireless from non-apple routers well?

As previously stated, Microsoft developed the software for both operating systems. (Windows %26 Macintosh) They are written in the same format and should be compatible with any program that can read word files. The same goes for most file types. If you can open or edit a file in a program on one OS, then that same program or a similar one, will be able to open or edit the file on another OS. For example, .wmv (Windows Media Video) are written to be played with Windows Media Player however, you can download WMV for mac, or a similar application (flip4mac) which recodes the file to be able to be played in QuickTime. So you shouldn't have worries about files being compatible, because its the software that makes the difference, not the operating system.

I'm not sure if the apple's word processing software can read and write to word documents, however I believe they should be. They can read and right Rich Text Format (.rtf) and .txt. However, I suggest purchasing Word For Mac 2008 when it is available. Word is a great word processor, one of the few things Microsoft does well.

Yes mac can pick up any 8.211 wifi signals, meaning, they can connect to any wireless router that offers itself willingly, meaning, not hidden. But if you buy a MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, I suggest you purchase the new TimeCapsule, as it serves as both a wireless router and a backup harddrive.

Good luck with your switch to Mac, I'm sure you will not be dissapointed. =)
